Energaia - Skyline Spirulina

When we contact the Energaia’s team to talk about their project on our blog, they gave us an appointment on the rooftop of the Novotel of Bangkok. We were excited to know how they can produce food on a rooftop in a big city as Bangkok (and to enjoy the view) !

Indeed, Energaia produces spirulina in a non-traditional way. Muhammet Dortkardes, Operation Manager at Energaia explained that Energaia’s mission is to provide a clean, healthy and sustainable food source while focusing on sustainable farming and the reduction of harmful greenhouse gasses.

Spirulina has been consumed for centuries for its nutrition facts. It is known for its « seaweed » taste. It is a healthy and natural super-food that was « rediscovered » a few years ago. Spirulina has as a high protein content and has all the amino acids that the human body needs. It also has antioxidant properties.

The original way of producing spirulina is by harvesting it from natural lakes. The other way is huge open pump systems. Energaia designed a closed system that maximises production with minimal resources, reduces potential for contamination, and allows the company to produce Spirulina virtually anywhere. This modular system is easily scalable but also doesn’t take too much lands usable for agriculture. That is why they focus on unused spaces in cities or rooftops!

Energaia focuses on a sustainable farming model. They bring their production model in remote areas where people doesn’t have an alternative income sources. They teach to farmers how to grow spirulina themselves during 2 or 3 months. Then, Energaia give them the guarantee to buy their crop they produce at a fair and fixed price. Farmers can also keep a certain amount of spirulina for their own consumption.

Energaia sells its products under the Skyline Spirulina brand-name. Energaia wants to move away from the idea of spirulina is a medicine. The company wants to implement it in a more natural way to the food consumption of people. One way of that is using fresh paste. You can mix it with ice cream or milkshake for example, the taste is pretty much the same. Energaia also makes vegan pasta, eggs are replaced by spirulina, or energy balls.

In the next few years, Energaia plan to boost the spirulina's production, there is a worldwide growing demand. At the same time, the company wants to increase the social farming model and expand in Bangladesh or Indonesia where needs are important. They focus on areas where spirulina can be an alternative to other non-sustainable activities as over-fishing areas and where spirulina could be useful for families in need.
